What is Series 65?

The Series 65 is an exam and securities license required by many U.S. states required to be an investment adviser representative. A range of topics are covered in the Series 65 exam, including regulations, laws, fiduciary responsibilities, ethics, portfolio management strategies, and retirement planning. Formally known as the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, Series 65 is a North American Securities Administrators Association administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).  

Preparing for the Series 65 Exam

The Series 65 examination is a 3-hour exam which candidates have to complete  130 multiple-choice questions. With a pass rate of just over 72%, the exam covers four major topics: Economic Factors and Business Information, Investment Vehicle Characteristics, Client Investment Recommendations and Strategies, Laws, and Regulations.
