This module will introduce students to fire and explosion investigations. The physics and chemistry of fires will be emphasized, specifically the construction, classification, and identification of incendiary devices, combustion accelerants and explosives, incomplete combustion, air/gas flow and pressure effects, and fragmentation. Preventive measures include the detection of explosives in places such as airports. It will also give students an understanding of fatal fires in relation to vehicles and buildings, as well as how to determine the origin and cause of a fatal fire, including evidence of arson, and how to identify the causes of fires and explosions: natural, accidental, and deliberate.
