About Social Studies on Brainscape
What is Social Studies?
Social Studies is a phrase first coined by American educators and the debate continues as to the exact or preferred definition. However, the Barth 1993 definition is:
Social studies is the interdisciplinary integration of social science and humanities concepts for the purpose of practicing problem solving and decision-making for developing citizenship skills on critical social issues.
School and college programs cover many disciplines including political science, history, economics, geography, law, philosophy, psychology, and sociology in addition to natural sciences and math.
Whilst a social studies degree will not directly lead to a specific profession, transferable skills means that social studies majors may consider roles in the following fields: business management, politics, economics, psychology, teaching, sales, law, and marketing.
