The digestive system consists of the mouth, the salivary glands, the oesophagus, the liver, the gall bladder, the small intestine ( the duodenum and the bile duct), the appendix, the stomach, the pancreas, the large intestine, the rectum and the anus

What is the function of the mouth

A

Digestion of food starts in the mouth. Teeth break down the food and mix it with the
enzymes in saliva. It also begins the digestion of carbohydrates.

A

It begins the digestion of protein and small molecules as alcohol are absorbed here

What is the function of the small intestine?

A

Digested food is absorbed in the small intestine. This means that it passes through the wall of the small intestine and into the bloodstream. The blood then carries the useful substances around the body to where they are needed.

What is the function of the large intestine?

A

By the time the contents reach the large intestine, most of the digested food has been absorbed. This just leaves water and the waste material that the body doesn’t need or can’t digest. The large intestine absorbs the water and gets rid of the faeces.
