- Hole is protected by roof structure to prevent flooding

- Large white cloth is stretched under tree
- Tree is shaken to dislodge vertebrates
- Insects are collected in white cloth

At set intervals, long pins can be pushed through the bar to reach the ground. Each species of plant that the pin touches is recorded
