The U.S. government negotiated treaties that forced Native American tribes in the Southeast to move west of the Mississippi River.
Dawes Act
Purpose: To assimilate Native Americans into U.S. society by turning communal tribal land into private property.
What it did:
Surveyed tribal lands and divided them into individual allotments (usually 160 acres per family).
“Excess” land not given to Native Americans was sold to white settlers or corporations.
