Cost centres
A section of a business, such as a department, to which costs can be allocated or charged.
Profit centres
A section of a business to which both costs and revenues can be allocated.
Variance analysis can be:
Adverse variances
Unfavourable to the firm.
Favourable variances
Beneficial to the business.
Positive variance
Occurs where ‘actual’ exceeds ‘planned’ or ‘budgeted’ value.
Negative variance
Occurs where ‘actual’ is less than ‘planned’ or ‘budgeted’ value.
