Type of waste classification based on:
- the chemical properties of a waste/chemical are known and it has already been classified
- no new testing required
- Listed in AUGWM
Criteria for classifying waste
- waste that has not already been classified and is not listed in the Schedule
- Sample of the waste must therefore be tested and its properties compared to the list of properties of hazardous waste given in schedule 1
- if exceed any of these properties the waste is classified as hazardous waste

Use WCR
Class 3 properties
- Flammable Liquids
- has a flash point < 60.5
Flashpoint
Lowest Temperature at which a volatile liquid can vaporize to form an ignitable mixture in air
Requires an ignition source
Lower flashpoint = more dangerous chemcial
Class 3 divisions
- 1 flash point less than -18
- 2 flash point between -18 and 23
- 3 flash point between 23 and 60.5
Class 3 packing groups
Based on initial boiling point
-lower BP = greater the hazard
Flammable Solids properties
- it ignites and propagates combustion in a test sample
- only solids
- includes solids that spontaneously combust due to friction, adsorption of moisture or spontaneous chemical changes
Class 4 divisons
- 1 Flammable Solids: Readily combustible solids
- 2 Pyrophoric Solids- spontaneously combust in air
- 3 Substances that on contact with water will emit flammable gases
Class 5 properties
- Oxidizing substances
- contributes oxygen for combustion at a rate that is equal to or greater than that provided by ammonium persulphate, potassium perchlorate or potassium bromate
- applies only to solids
Class 5 divisions
- 1 oxidizing substances- mainly inorganic
- 2 mainly organics with O-O bond (thermally unstable)
- burn rapidly, decompose explosively, sensitive to friction & impact
Class 6 properties
- Toxic (poisonous) substances
- doesn’t include infectious substances from TDG
- if no data exists to show a substance is toxic you can assume it is not

- corrosive
- has a pH value less than 2.0 or greater than 12.5
- applies to solids and liquids
- no divisions
- packing group based on visible necrosis of skin destruction over a period of time
Class 9 properties
- Misc. Products and substances
- contains PCBs at concentration equal to or greater than 50 mg/kg
- includes dilutions
Class 9 divisions
- 1 PCBs or Articles containing PCBs
- 2 Toxic Leachate
- 3 Toxic Leachate, Dioxins and Furans
-all will fall into PG III unless otherwise specified
