Symbols
Sweetish Jon’s Jakob Berzuliehs in early 1800s suggested symbolic system to describe all elements using the letters of their common or Latin name
Metals
-majority of events discovered first were metals
Metal properties & characteristics
Lustre
Malleable
Ductile
Conductors of heat and electricity
Solid at room temperature
Usually denser then non-metals
Active metals react with acid
Non meltals
Do not have characteristics of metald
Non metals Properties and Characteristics
-Lustre dull
-Malleable: likely to be brittle or shatter when struck
-usually lower melting and boiling point then metals
-often gases at room temperature
-poor conductors of electricity
Metallioids or semi-metals
A few elements that do not fit in either group so they are semiconductors or metallics
Ex. Silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium all exhibit some of the qualities of metals and non metals
