7 - Carving Flashcards

1
Q

Explain where and how (3) to carve.

A

Choice of terrain
Well-trodden, wide, clear, mild to medium steep slope. The speed is higher when cutting and the surfing corridor is wider, so the main emphasis when surfing should be on safety.

Execution
For easier understanding and explanation, the turn in the incision technique divided into three phases:
1. Entering the turn: We activate the torso, both feet are evenly loaded, the center of gravity is above the board between the feet. We start in an oblique descent. Before the turn, we perform a slight tilt and activate the knee, ankle and hip joints, due to the tilt the board “finds support in the curb. “The lateral arc takes us in the desired direction.
2. Turn management: We insist on an active position or adapt it to the board and the terrain. Excessive tilt without proper knee contraction can quickly lead to loss of balance and a fall, especially at lower speeds. The upper part of the body should be as straight as possible for optimal distribution of forces. The head and torso lead the turn. The change of the edge attachment is carried out by relieving the load and tilting into a new turn. The change of the edge is carried out without twisting.
3. End of turn: Changing the edge is the end of one turn and the beginning of a new one. A turn is completed at the point when we reduce our speed to the point where we can easily start a new turn, or when we feel that “the board is leading us uphill”.

Q

What is a common problem and solutions?

A
  • Upper body forward bend and board slip
—> Performing turns only with knees or tilt
—> Consciously tense the core muscles and control the hips
—> Practice turns towards the bank to the highest possible point.
