  • Visible natural horizon as viewed by the pilot
  • Ship motion should not exceed 5 deg pitch and 10 deg roll
  • turn on the HIFR heading lights and position the LSE with both amber wantds at the helo control point
  • Establish radio contact with the helo and pass the ship’s course and speed, pitch, roll, and relative wind
  • NATOPS: Relative winds should be 10-30 knots from 330-360

• Shall not be attempted unless the aircraft does not have adequate fuel to divert to a GCA or CCA.
• Practice ELVA’s in VMC shall be conducted routinely to enhance controller/pilot proficiency.
• Following must be fully operable and accurately calibrated at all times:
• Suface search radar, Air search radar with IFF, TACAN, Gunfire control radar, NC2 USM plotter, UHF transceivers, Anemometers, Barometer
• Starts at 4 miles 400’ 70 knots, goes to ½ mile 50’ 40 knots , missed approach 100 yards, 50’.
• Missed approach, turn left 30 degrees, climb to 400’, speed up to 90 knots.
• Starboard: BRC – approach angle. Port: BRC + approach angle
• ½ standard rate turn

Question 15

Lost comms/aircraft

• Assumed when a mode 3 code of 7600, radar target is making 120 degree turns every 2 min, radio comms check or report is 15 mins. Overdue, ship and helo do not make contact at briefed recovery time
• Lost a/c: radio comms check or report is 30 mins overdue or when a/c is 30 mins overdue for recovery time.
• Lost a/c procedure:
• Obtain radar/radio contact. Send info in blind and search all IFF modes. Monitor guard.
• Inform OTC
• Keep up-to-date estimate of aircraft’s fuel state
• Call for TACAN UH/DF and ES watch to be set
• Alert command of other aids.
• IMC: commence approach at prebriefed recovery time using assigned marshall and TACAN

Hung/Misfired Ordnance

• Notify ship as early as possible (amount and type)
• Safe all weapons
• Secure HF and FM transmitters, radar altimeter, IFF and TACAN.
• Point weapon away from the ship to the maximum extent practicable
• RecoveryEnter Alpha patern: clockwise 300’ AGL, 80 KIAS
• Do not allow the heading of aircraft to cross ship
• Offset approach
• Shall be flown from the right seat only during day or night VMC only.
• Aircraft should be in port RSD
• Crab increases as you get closer to the ship
• 5 degrees left of BRC ¼ mile increasing left yaw to 25 – 40 degrees left of ships centerline.
• Min required personnel shall be on deck and remain clear of the firing line.

Question 17

What does the ship do when an aircraft declares an emergency?

Answer 17

1. Aircraft position — Plot.
2. Radar contact — Maintain, if possible.
3. Turn toward the aircraft’s last known position or crash site and proceed at best speed.
4. Provide aircraft with vectors to the nearest airport or air-capable ship — As required.
5. Air distress frequencies (121.5 MHz VHF/243.0 MHz UHF) — Monitor.
6. Summon qualified pilot to CIC and/or bridge — If available.
7. Notify senior detachment pilot aboard — If available.
8. Brief and station additional lookouts — As required.
9. Request assistance from/inform accompanying units/agencies — As required.
10. Obtain amplifying information as to type of emergency and pilot’s intentions.
