A

The Word small has connotations of little and miniscule.

The word cages has connotations of trapped, crammed and imprisoned.

This suggests that the prisoners cells are painfully small trapping them in and dehumisaing them to be small weak animals rather than the living human beings that they really are.

A

Squatting has connoations of painful and uncomfortable.

This further emphaises the little amount of space the prisoners have in their cells as they have to sit in an akward and agonising postion for hours at a time having no other choice due to the miniscule cage they are in, humanity being stripped before they are even killed.

A

Puny has conotations of something weakly small and vunerable.

Wisp has connoations of something fragile and weightless.

This conveys that the man has been destroyed and worn down in prison into a feeble and defencless past version of himself.

“He stepped slightly aside to avoid the puddle on the path”

A

Slightly has connotations of something slow or overlooked.

Shows that despite the prisoner is being sent to his death, he has the human instinct of not stepping into a puddle to avoid getting his feet wet. This shows his humanity and awarness brining forward the idea of the moral wrongness of capital punishment.

A

The word unspeakable has connoations of something so horific that it cannot be put into words.

This clearly shows Orwells strong opinion on capital punishment as he sees it as moraly wrong and a horrible act against humans. The act is so bad that he cannot put it into words

The word concious has connotations of aware and humane

This shows that capital punsihent treats human life like it is nothing and wipes it from the face of the earth even when the man has nothing wrong with him and is fully aware and experiancing the moment.

“Stop that abominable noise”

A

The word abominalbe has connotations of something disgusting and wicked.

This conveys the fact that the mans cries were so unbearable and horrible that even orwell wanted the hanging to be over and done with so that he didint have to endure a second longer of hearing that vile sound

Shows how everyone in the crowd is uncomfortable
