-Picture symbols, iPad apps, text-to-speech, real objects

UNAIDED
-No tools needed
-Sign language, gestures, facial expressions, vocalizations

What is AAC

A

Augmentative and Alternative Communication - is an area of clinical practice that supplements or compensates for impairments in speech-language production and/or comprehension, including spoken and written modes of communication

AUGMENTATIVE means to add to someone’s speech.

ALTERNATIVE means to be used instead of speech.

What kinds of tech does aided AAC entail?

A

LOW TECH = non-electronic tools
- marker and white board, gestures, picture schedules, communication boards, picture communication symbols (PCS), alphabet board, core words board

MID TECH = simple, battery operated devices. Often have a limited number of pre-programmed messages
- BIG Mack button, GoTalk,

HIGH TECH = sophisticated electronic devices
- tablets, keyboards, talkers (TouchChat, TobiDynovox, LAMP), eye gaze devices, head gaze devices
