Benefits of regular PA?
Lower CVD, all-cause mortality,
What is the purpose of the new Pre-participation screening?
Reduce need to get medical clearance = reduce barriers
Provides quality assessment w/ low barriers to adopt PA behaviours
Confirm the idea that Ex is safe for most people and have so many health benefits
How does Vigorous Intensity Affect Risk?
Increased risk of adverse cardiac event relative to rest, especially in sedentary people w/ known or occult CVD
Normally, absolute & relative risks of CV event are low for those w/out symptoms of CVD
How do Pulmonary diseases affect the Pre-screening?
Are not automatically referred for med clearance –> does not increase risk of adverse CV event
When are people required to get medical clearance for Ex?
When S&S are present or if Ex clearance is not known when there is known metabolic disease
3 Goals of New ACSM Guidelines?
1) identify people who should receive medical clearance before starting Ex or increasing frequency, intensity or volume
2) Identify people w/ clinical disease who would benefit from Ex program
3) Identify people w/ a medical condition that should be excluded from Ex program until conditon is better
How does regular PA impact CVD risk?
24hr risk of CVD events drops by 50%
Relative risk is lower at rest and during vigorous Ex
What are the 3 Focuses/ Questions of New ACSM Guidelines?
1) What is current PA level? (currently active (3 months of 3 days/ week for 30 mins) or no?)
2) Presence of S&S of disease?
3) What is the desired Ex intensity?
Do physically Active people w/ no S&S need med clearance?
No –> progress Ex intensity as desired. Can go straight to vig Ex
If S&S show, then discontinue and seek med advice
Do physically active people w/ known but asymptomatic metabolic disease need clearance?
No as long as they have received med clearance w/in last 12 months
Can do moderate intensity
Do sedentary people w/out disease need med screen?
No - if they have no S&S
Start w/ light-mod intensity
can progress to vig if no S&S
5 Principles for ExRx?
1) Use FITT-VPP
2) Proper warm-up/ cool down
3) Educate for S&S
4) Encourage reduction in sedentary behaviour - small breaks
5) encourage sedentary people to limit vig activity - start w/ light-mod
