Q

What is the purpose of the new Pre-participation screening?

A

Reduce need to get medical clearance = reduce barriers

Provides quality assessment w/ low barriers to adopt PA behaviours

Confirm the idea that Ex is safe for most people and have so many health benefits

Q

How does Vigorous Intensity Affect Risk?

A

Increased risk of adverse cardiac event relative to rest, especially in sedentary people w/ known or occult CVD

Normally, absolute & relative risks of CV event are low for those w/out symptoms of CVD

Q

How do Pulmonary diseases affect the Pre-screening?

A

Q

3 Goals of New ACSM Guidelines?

A

1) identify people who should receive medical clearance before starting Ex or increasing frequency, intensity or volume

2) Identify people w/ clinical disease who would benefit from Ex program

3) Identify people w/ a medical condition that should be excluded from Ex program until conditon is better

Q

How does regular PA impact CVD risk?

A

24hr risk of CVD events drops by 50%

Relative risk is lower at rest and during vigorous Ex

Q

What are the 3 Focuses/ Questions of New ACSM Guidelines?

A

1) What is current PA level? (currently active (3 months of 3 days/ week for 30 mins) or no?)

2) Presence of S&S of disease?

3) What is the desired Ex intensity?

Q

Do physically Active people w/ no S&S need med clearance?

A

If S&S show, then discontinue and seek med advice

Q

5 Principles for ExRx?

A

1) Use FITT-VPP
2) Proper warm-up/ cool down
3) Educate for S&S
4) Encourage reduction in sedentary behaviour - small breaks
5) encourage sedentary people to limit vig activity - start w/ light-mod
