What are the types of DCS?
Type 1 = pain only
Type 2 = CNS involvement
What time scale do symptoms occur in?
42% = 1 hour 60% = 3 hours 83% = 8 hours 98% = 24 hours
What is type 1 DCS?
Joint and muscle pain, swelling or pain in lymph nodes, skin symptoms
Shoulder, elbow or wrist are common
Itching is common, then discolouration
What is type 2 DCS?
Tired, weak, hearing problems, walking problems, difficulty urinating
Split into neurological and cardiorespiratory
What is the ‘chokes’?
Difficulty breathing, painful inhalation and SOB

Orientation - name, DOB, where they are Eyes - H movement, pupils equal and responding to light Forehead = sensation and movement Face = movement Ears = check hearing Gag reflex = get them to swallow Tongue = stick out Shoulders = shrug Arms = squeeze fingers, test strength Chest = skin sensation Legs = strength Heel to toe = walk heel to toe for balance
