Bauhaus
The Bauhaus was both a school and a movement in Germany founded by Walter Gropius in 1919. Gropius maintained a utopian vision of a unification between fine art (such as painting) and craftsmanship (such as woodworking).
What does Bauhas architecture eliminate?
Unnecessary ornamentaion. Made for open floor plans, features basic colors. Glass is used liberally often repalcing walls. roofs are flat instead of pitched.
What was the goal of the Art Nouveau movement?
To unite artists all over the world to create a uniquely decorative style of art.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
widely respected Art Nouveau artist whose poster art showcased the variety of roles women held in society, including both conventional and unconventional.
Gustav Klimt
perhaps the most widely known Art Nouveau artist. His erotic paintings, rich with gold, mosaic detail (such as The Kiss, 1907–1908) were immediately cherished for their decorative, Byzantine beauty and they still occupy the walls of major art galleries all over the world.
Louis Comfort Tiffany
(who invented the Tiffany style in America) also made significant contributions to Art Nouveau.
IMPRESSIONISM
the Impressionists preferred to paint expansive landscapes or open-air scenes. They also often selected everyday scenes and subjects for their paintings, as opposed to portraits of wealthy socialites or religious-themed imagery. Other artists generally preferred to paint static scenes, but the Impressionists emphasized movement and the notion of capturing a moment in time. While their contemporaries often painted their landscapes from a studio, the Impressionists adopted an entire new method of painting that allowed them the freedom to paint outside.
CLAUDE MONET
Claude Monet was one of the founding members of the Impressionist movement and the artist indirectly responsible for the group’s moniker. He is best known for his iconic paintings of water lilies inspired by those found on his property in Giverny, France, but his works span more than sixty years and consist of hundreds of landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.
