What is a group/family? What do they have in common?
Vertical column. Same number of valence electrons.
What is a period? What do they have in common?
Horizontal row. Same number of electrons shells.
What is the periodic law?
The properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers. This means that when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, their physical and chemical properties repeat in a predictable pattern. Consequently, elements with similar properties are found in the same vertical columns (groups) on the periodic table.
Who created the periodic table?
Dmitri Mendeleev
What are characteristics of metals?
Shiny, good heat and electricity conductors. Non metals are opposite.
Describe the size of a proton, neutron, and electron.
Proton and neutron are about the same size, electron is significantly smaller.
What is a valence electron?
The electron in the outermost shell responsible for bonding.
What overall charge does an unreacted Atom have? Why?
Zero because it has an equal number of protons and neutrons.
Who was the first person to say that the atom was the smallest indivisible unit of matter and was like a small dense ball?
Dalton
What famous experiment did Rutherford use to discover the nucleus of the atom?
Gold foil
What did JJ Thomson relate his model of the atom to?
A chocolate chip cookie.
Who created the modern-day 2D view of the atom that we still use today?
Bohr
Do electrons contribute to the atomic mass of an atom?
No
What is the only liquid metal on the periodic table?
Mercury.
