Why is ATP important?
- plants and animals release energy from glucose during respiration
- since a cell can’t get energy directly from glucose the energy released from glucose is turned into ATP
How is ATP made?
- made from the nucleotide adenine combined with ribose sugar and three phosphate groups
- it’s also known as a nucleotide derivative as its a modified form of a nucleotide

How does ATP give the cell energy?
- once it’s made ATP diffuses to the part of the cell that needs energy
- the energy in ATP is stored in high energy bonds between the phosphate groups
- the energy is released by hydrolysis reactions

The ATP hydrolysis can be couples to other energy requiring reactions in the cell so energy that is real eased can be used directly to make the coupled reaction happen rather than being lost as heat

the released inorganic phosphate can be added to another compound by phosphorylation which often makes the compound more reactive
How is ATP re-synthesised?
Through a condensation reaction between ADP and P which happens during respiration and photosynthesis whichever catalysed by the enzyme ATP synthase
