Q

How is an X-ray tube designed, and what happens to X-rays as they interact with matter

A
  • Tube shielded with lead except for radiolucent window.
  • X-rays that pass through window interact with matter.
  • X-rays have the desire to interact with matter.
  • Excess energy - need to lose to become stable

Q

what happens to the 3 photons when they interact with matter

A

photon A:
* Interacts with the atom and is deflected.
* May or may be not accompanied with a loss of energy.
* Known as scattering

photon B:
* Interacts with the atom.
* Loses all of its energy to the atom.
* Known as absorption

photon C:
* Passes through the material with minimal or no interaction.
* Known as transmission.
