How have we saved the giant panda from extinction
- symbol of the WWF since 1961
- large area of forest are now protected, and hunting the giant panda is illegal
- many pandas (61%) live in captivity
- zoos around the world increase the population by breeding them, or exchange pandas for captive breeding programmes
The Chatham island was set up to protect black robins, but why did it become a problem
- the habitat is too small, so some birds are being ,over to other islands
- there is very little genetic variation in the population so it would be vulnerable if there were any environmental changes
- there is increased competition with birds on the island
What are the 2 different types of whales, what do they eat and how do they eat it
- baleen whale; eats small animals called krill, the whale sieves water through baleen plates in its mouth and traps the krill
- toothed whale; have lots of teeth to trap food such as squid

In the sea that contains the most amount of its prey; some whales will follow their prey to a different place (migration)
What is a sustainable resource
A resource where if a few are taken, they will never die out. E.g. Whales, fish and trees. Oil is NOT a sustainable resource

Why was whaling reintroduced even after it was banned in 1986
Countries such as Norway, Iceland and Japan had small communities that used and relied on whaling for food and income
When fossil fuels run out, whaling will become one of the alternative fuels. What factors must be accounted for when whaling
- pollution levels
- overfishing of the whales food source
- food webs in the ecosystem
What 2 ways can the environment change
- naturally (eg ice age)
- artificially (eg due to human activity, like destruction of habitat and pollution of rivers or lakes by industry or sewage)
