1
Q

What are the layers done in bandaging, and what are their purposes?

A
  1. Primary layer → touches the wound
  2. Secondary layer → padding, conforms to shape
  3. Tertiary layer → to secure & protect bandaging underneath

Q

What are the 2 types of bandages we use as part of the Primary Layer? What do each do? What are some types of each?

A
  • Adhering → can help debride; Dry-to-dry, Wet-to-dry
  • Non-Adhering → maintains moist environment; occlusive, semi-occlusive

Q

How does a Dry-to-dry bandage work?

A

applied dry → absorbs low viscosity fluid from wound → can help debride → change once dry again

Q

How does a Wet-to-dry bandage work?

A

applied while moist w/ NaCl, LRS, or sterile water + antiseptics → helps dilute highly-viscous excess exudate → can help debride → change once dried out

Q

What are the differences between occlusive & semi-occlusive non-adherent bandages?

A
  • occlusive = nothing gets out, used for minimal exudate w/ granulation tissue → should be changed less frequently
  • semi-occlusive = air/moisture can get out, used for moderate/copious exudate → should be changed frequently

9
Q

How does the Robert Jones bandaging technique work?

A

use firm, evenly distributed pressure to wrap wounded limb → pressure is created within bandage → pressure/support promotes wound healing
