Bargaining can be viewed strategically, where the ability to commit to a position allows a player to
capture the lions share of gains from trade
Credible commitments are difficult to make because they
require players to commit to a course of action against their self-interest
The nonstrategic view of bargaining does not focus on the explicit rules of the game to understand
the likely outcome of the bargaining
Anything you can do to increase opponents gains from reaching agreement or
to decrease your own will improve your bargaining position
