- An emotion-arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers physiological responses and the subjective experience of emotion.
- Stimulus ==> Physiological response + feeling emotion (At the same time and one is not dependent upon the other)
What is the pathway for the Cannon-Bard Thalamic theory?
- Info from the stimulus goes to the thalamus. From there, info is simultaneously relayed to the cerebral cortex (produces emotional experience) and to the hypothalamus and ANS
- Thalamus transmits a signal to the amygdala (limbic system) and to the ANS for the physiological response

- Starting a new job ==> feel nervous and experience an upset stomach
- going on a date ==> excitement and sweaty palms and rapid heartbeat

Routed to the limbic system by the Thalamus → Limbic system initiate the Hypothalamus and Sympathetic Nervous System → Sensation from the body’s arousal are sent back to the cortex and produce conscious feelings of emotions. Response → Related Emotion

Information from the stimulus travels first to the cerebral cortex where it is both interpreted and experienced. Then a message is sent down to the limbic system and ANS that results in physiological arousal.
What is the Solomon’s opponent Theory?
- Emotional responses to stimuli are regulated by an underlying physiological mechanism.
- Emotions act in opposite pairs - pleasure is an opposing emotion to pain.
- However, if a person is repeatedly exposed to something that they fear, the emotion will eventually trigger an opposite emotion which will make the first emotion gets fade and weaker while the opponent will get stronger.
