What is a Bill ?
A bill is a proposal for new laws before it becomes a formal Act of Parliament.
What are the four types of Bill ?
-Public Bills
-Private Bills
-Private Members Bill
- Hybrid Bills
What is a Public Bill ?
-A bill which would affect the whole country, usually created by the government
What is an example of a Public Bill ?
Criminal Justice Act (2003)
What is a Private Bill ?
Bills which affect certain individuals or groups, and are introduced by them. These often start in the HoL.
What is an example of a Private Bill ?
University of London Bill (2018-2019)
This bill allowed the universities to award their own degrees (only affected this organisation)
What is a Private Members Bill ?
A Bill introduced by an MP or Lord, who’re not part of the current government. “Backbenchers, who are successful in making laws”.
What is an example, of a Private Members Bill ?
Abortion Act 1967
This bill was Introduced by MP David Steel which legalised abortion in certain circumstances.
What is a Hybrid Bill ?
(Similar to Private Bills), these are Bills created by the government, but only affect certain individuals.
What is an example of a Hybrid Bill ?
High Speed Rail (London–West Midlands) Act 2017
This affected everyone, but especially those along the route.
