What does Plasma do?
Carries almost everything your body needs
Red, white blood cells and platelets
digested food products (like glucose and amino acids) from the gut to all of the body cells
C02 from body cells to the lungs
Urea from the liver to the kidneys (removed in urine)
hormones, which act as chemical messengers
heat energy
what do platelets do?
what do red blood cells do?
what does Phagocytes do?
what do Lymphocytes do?
Why are vaccines important?
when you are infected with a new pathogen it can take your lymphocytes a while to produce the antibodies to deal with it, in that time you can get very ill or even die
how does vaccination work?
injecting a dead or inactive pathogen into the body, these carry antigens, so even though there harmless they still trigger an immune response, memory cells will be produced and remain in the blood, so if that live pathogen enters, anti bodies will kill it faster.
where do Arteries carry blood?
away from the heart
where do capillaries carry blood?
exchange of materials at tissuies
where do veins carry blood?
towards the heart
Describe and name the adaptations of capillaries?
what branch into capillaries?
arteris
why do capillaries carry blood really close to every cell in the body?
to exchange substances with them
what is the function of Capillaries?
exchange substances - supply food and oxygen and take away wastes like C02
List some adaptations of capillaries?
permeable walls, so substances can diffuse in and out.
walls are only one cell thick. this increases the rate of diffusion by decreasing the distance over which it happens.
why are artery walls strong and elastic?
because the heart pumps blood at high pressure.
what do the elastic fibers allow the artery to do?
expand
what makes arteries strong?
the walls are thick compared to the size of the lumen they contain thick layers of muscle.
capillaries eventually join up to form?
veins
why doesn’t the wall of a vein need to be as thick as an artery?
because the blood is at lower pressure.
what adaptation do veins have to help blood flow?
bigger lumen than arteries to help blood flow despite the lower pressure
what does a valve do in a vein?
helps keep blood flowing in the right direction.
