• Sporangium: Mature female bryophytes develop a single sporangium which is a spore-producing structure.
• Non-vascular stem: Hold the sporangium upright for spore dispersal.
• Thallus: A leaf-like structure that increases the surface area for water absorption from the rhizoids.
• Non-vascular leaves: Primitive structures that are only one cell layer thick with no waxy cuticle for easy water absorption. It also contains chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
• Rhizoids: Primitive filamentous outgrowths that anchor the plants to a solid surface.
