what is the anode?
the positive electrode.
what is the half equation reaction at the anode, for hydroxide ions?
4OH- / 02 + 2H20 + 4e-
describe the standard electrolysis set up.
starting from a d.c. power supply, the positive anode is connected to the positive terminal giving it a positive charge, and the opposite goes for the cathode.
place the electrodes in the electrolyte and the cations(+) will attract to the cathode(-) and once again the same will happen for the opposite anode.
this will seperate the two elements.
what does sodium chloride solution form in the beaker after electrolysis?
sodium hydroxide as the chlorine and hydrogen ions for at the electrodes
what does sodium sulphate solution form in the beaker after electrolysis?
a more concentrated sodium sulphate as effectively the water is just lost in the process.
what does copper chloride solution form in the beaker after electrolysis?
water as copper and chlorine are both are discharged.
in the electrolysis of water why is hydrogen gas produced much faster?
as in water for every one oxygen atom there are two hydrogen atoms.
- H2O
