Q

Murena

A
  • Cato supported the prosecution of the successful consular candidate Lucius Licinius Murena on the grounds of excessive bribery.
  • Cicero, great speaker, defended him and won the case on the grounds that the threat posed to the state at that very time meant that this was not the time or place to depose the consul elected for 62 BC.
  • Cicero also had gently mocked the extreme nature of Cato’s Stoicism: ‘He talks as if he were in the republic of Plato, when in fact he is in the crap of Romulus.’
