What is cell?
A cell is the smallest functional and structural unit of all living unit of all living organisms.
What is an organism?
An organism is any living thing.
What are all organisms made up of?
cells
What happens if a cell gets too large?
The cell’s surface area will not be large enough to take in enough nutrients or pump out enough waste.
What are the three basic characteristics of all cells and organisms that the cell theory lists?
All organisms are made up of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of all organisms. And all cells come from existing cells.
What are organisms that are made up of just one cell called?
Unicellular.
What are organisms that are made up of more than one cell called?
Multicellular.
What do cells in multicellular organisms do?
They have specialized functions.
What do cells in unicellular organisms do?
They must carry out all of the functions for life.
What is the cell membrane?
a protective layer that covers a cell’s surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment.
What is cytoplasm?
The region enclosed by the cell membrane that includes the fluid and all of the organelles of the cell.
What is an organelle?
a small body in a cell’s cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function.
What is DNA?
a genetic material that provided instruction for all cell processes.
What is the nucleus?
Where the DNA is contained in a membrane bound organelles.
What do Eukaryotic cells have that prokaryote cells don’t?
DNA in the nucleus. In a prokaryotic cell the DNA just floats around.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
is a single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles (DNA is located in the cytoplasm).
What organisms have prokaryotic cells?
Bacteria and archaea, they are smaller than Eukaryotic organisms.
What are Eukaryote?
An organism that contains their DNA in a nucleus.
What is an atom?
The basic building blocks of everything
What is a molecule?
Is a group of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds
What is a compound?
A substance made up of atoms of two or more elements joined by chemichal bonds
What are the nutrients cells need to do their functions?
Lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids.
What is a carbohydrate?
Molecules that include sugars, starches, and fiber. They store energy and are a energy source.
EX. Pasta🍝
what are lipids
they are a fat molecule or a molecule that has similar properties. They store energy.
Ex. olive oil🫒 and fish🐟
