Q

What happens if a cell gets too large?

A

The cell’s surface area will not be large enough to take in enough nutrients or pump out enough waste.

Q

What are the three basic characteristics of all cells and organisms that the cell theory lists?

A

All organisms are made up of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of all organisms. And all cells come from existing cells.

Q

What is the cell membrane?

A

a protective layer that covers a cell’s surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment.

15
Q

What do Eukaryotic cells have that prokaryote cells don’t?

A

DNA in the nucleus. In a prokaryotic cell the DNA just floats around.

16
Q

What is a prokaryotic cell?

A

is a single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles (DNA is located in the cytoplasm).

17
Q

What organisms have prokaryotic cells?

A

Bacteria and archaea, they are smaller than Eukaryotic organisms.

18
Q

What are Eukaryote?

A

An organism that contains their DNA in a nucleus.

19
Q

What is an atom?

A

The basic building blocks of everything

20
Q

What is a molecule?

A

Is a group of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds

21
Q

What is a compound?

A

A substance made up of atoms of two or more elements joined by chemichal bonds

22
Q

What are the nutrients cells need to do their functions?

A

Lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids.

23
Q

What is a carbohydrate?

A

Molecules that include sugars, starches, and fiber. They store energy and are a energy source.
EX. Pasta🍝

24
Q

what are lipids

A

they are a fat molecule or a molecule that has similar properties. They store energy.
Ex. olive oil🫒 and fish🐟

25
What are nucleic acids?
Molecules that carry information in cells, they are made up of smaller molecules called nucleotides. They tell everyone what to do EX. DNA 🧬
26
What is a protein and what does it do?
a molecule made up of smaller molecules called amino acids. They build and repair body structures. Ex. peanut butter🥜🧈 and meat🥩.
27
What are phospholipids and what do they do?
A lipid that contains phosphorus. They form much of the cells membrane. It has a tail that repels water. And it has a head that attracts water.
28
What are three reasons why water is important?
-Many cell processes require water -Nearly two thirds of the mass of a cell is made up of water -Water is an important nutrient for life
29
What is osmosis and why is it important?
The process by which water moves through the cell membrane, it depends on the concentration of water inside and outside of the cell, pure water has the highest concentration and salty water has the lowest concentration
30
What are the characteristics of a Eukaryotic cell?
They have one or more Eukaryotic cells. They also have membrane bound organelles, including a nucleus.
31
Cell Theory
The three basic characteristics of all cells and organisms: -All organisms are made up of one or more cells -The cell is the basic unit of all organisms -All cells come from existing cells
32
Parts that Protect and Support the cell
Cell membrane- acts as a barrier, protects the cell and regulates what enters and leaves the cell Cytoplasm- the region in-between the cell membrane and the nucleus that includes all fluid and all of the organelles Cytoskeleton- a network of protein filaments that give shape and support to the cells, it is involved in the cell division, it helps parts within the cell move or it may form structures that help the whole organism move
