Certification Requirements (61.65)
A person who applies for an Instrument rating must:
- had at least a ppl certificate with an airplane rating suitable to the Instrument rating sought
- be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
- receive and log ground training from an authorized Instructor
- receive a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized Instructor certify in that the person in prepared to take the required knowledge test
- receive and log training on the areas of operation from an authorized Instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or night den a training
- pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas
- pass the required practical test on the areas of operation necessary

Can Instrument currency be done in a simulator? Is an Instructor required?
Yes, provided that the sim is of the same category and class to bet of aircraft town and the pilot performs 6HITS under simulated Instrument conditions.
No, a Flight Instructor is not required.
If you haven’t logged 6 hits in the preceding 6 months what can you do to regain currency?
Go up with a safety pilot, it is within The next 6 months or complete an Instrument proficiency check

If after the additional 6 months the pilot still hasn’t regained currency, they must do an IPC. This can be done by a cfii, dpe, or other approved faa examiner. The IPC must consist of the areas of operation outlined in the ACS appendix a-12).
Can an IPC be done in a simulator?
The majority of an IOC can be done in an at as specified in the letter of authorization, however, the circling approach and landing tasks cannot be done.
