Q

What is a wet-sump oil system?

A

Oil is stored in a reservoir that’s part of the engine. An oil pump pumps oil to all necessary components and gravity pulls the oil back into the “sump” or oil pan.

Main difference between a dry sump system is that it is integrated into the engine.

Q

Where to find oil types and oil capacity?

A

Section 1 introduction or section 7 oil system

Section 1 says types of oil and capacity quickly, section 7 is more in-depth.

Q

Describe the carburetor system.

A

Up-draft, fixed jet, float-type

Up-draft = air flows up
float-type= floating device regulates amount of fuel in float chamber and carbeurator
fixed-jet = uses jet to vaporize fuel

Q

How does a carburetor work, end2end?

A

Air is intaken at the front part of the engine cowling and passes through an air filter. This is not where the alternator belt is, it’s below it. The filtered air passes through a venturi in the carburetor, creating an area of low pressure. This draws fuel from the discharge nozzle. How much fuel can flow through the discharge nozzle is controlled by the mixture needle by changing the area of the opening. The fuel in the carburetor lies in a float chamber. The float in the float chamber has a needle, so when the fuel level gets too low, the needle goes down, and more fuel goes into the carburetor. There is a constant suction force driving this process like a one long straw, which comes from the low pressure created in the engine cylinders during the downward stroke.

Q

Describe the flaps

A

Slotted fowler.

Slotted = slot in wing to re-energize air flow
fowler = flap moves backwards then down.

Q

Describe the ailerons.

A

Differential, frise type.

Differential: The aileron that moves up moves more up than the aileron that moves down to counteract adverse yaw.

Frise ailerons: the aileron that moves up pivots into the airstream, creating form drag and counteracting adverse yaw.

Q

Describe the electrical system.

A

28-volt, DC. Powered by 60-amp alternator and 24 volt, 14-17 amp-hour battery battery.

alternator control unit controls how much power is produced by the alternator. primary bus controls everything except avionics bus, which is GPS, radio, etc…
