Q

Describe mode of action of a heteroge_neo_us catalyst

A
  1. Diffusion
    - Rxt molecules diffuse to the surface of the catalyst.
    .
  2. Chemisorption
    - rxt molecules are chemically a_d_sorbed onto the surface of neighbouring active sites.
    - Chemisorption involve the formation of temporary weak bonds btwn molecules and catalyst using vacant energically accessible orbitals
    .
    These weak bonds:
    - weaken covalent bonds within the rxts, lowering the Ea.
    - increase surface conc of rxts.
    - hold rxts in the correct orientation for rxn to occur, increasing rate of effective collisions.
    .
  3. Reaction
    - Rxts dissociate to form highly rxtive intermediates, which combine to form (prdt).
    .
  4. Desorption
    - Prdts break free from catalyst and diffuse away
    - Catalyst is regenerated.
