the figure of a syllogism is disposition (or location) of terms in the premises.

the middle term is the subject of the major premise , and the predicate in the minor premise.
second figure syllogisum, prae-prae
the middle term is the predicate of the major premise, and the predicate in the minor premise.
third figure syllogism, sub-sub
the middle term is the subject in the major and the minor premises
fourth figure, indirect first, or prae-sub
the middle term is the predicate in the major premise and the subject in the minor premise (another of the first)
