Purpose
- Consistent VLAN configuration across all switches

Server Mode
- Default Mode
- Create, add and delete vlans
- Saved in NVRAM
Client Mode
- Same as Server, but can’t create, add or delete VLANS
- Not stored in NVRAM
- Receives and Forwards advertisements
Transparent Mode
- Dont participate in VTP, but forward through trunks
- VLANS are saved internally in NVRAM, but not forwarded to other switches
VTP Pruning
Knows which VLANS are needed and restricts broadcast from leaving trunks if forwarded switch doesn’t have said VLAN. Off by default
