What are correlations? What will and won’t they tell us?
Correlations: the relationship between two variables
- will provide that a relationship exists & if it’s positive/negative
- will NOT provide if it is a cause and effect relationship
positive correlation
two variables change in the same direction
negative correlation
two variables change in opposite directions
Range of Pearson’s R & meaning
range: -1 up to 1
-1: perfectly negative linear relationship
1: perfectly positive linear relationship
Problems that can distort Pearson’s R
alternatives to pearson’s r
When to use Spearman correlation
When to use the point-based correlation
when one variable is dichotomous (yes/no answer) and the other is on an interval/ratio scale
- CLOSELY RELATED TO THE INDEPENDENT MEASURES T-TEST
When to use the Phi-Coefficient
when variables are BOTH dichotomous (yes/no)
How do you calculate SP?
The sum total of (X-Mx)(Y-My)
How do you calculate SS?
The sum total of (X-Mx)^2
MUST BE TO THE SECOND POWER!!!!
