Seattle longitudinal study
The first cross-sectional study of adult intelligence. This study began in 1956 and is repeated every seven years.
Fluid intelligence
Those types of basic intelligence that make learning of all sorts quick and thorough. Abilities such as short term memory, abstract thought, and speed of thinking are all usually considered part of fluid intelligence.
Crystallized intelligence
Those types of intellectual ability that reflect accumulated learning. Vocabulary and general information are examples. Some developmental psychologists think crystallized intelligence increases with age, while fluid intelligence declines.
Analytic intelligence
A form of intelligence that involves such mental processes as abstract planning, strategy selection, focused attention, and information processing, as well as verbal and logical skills.
Creative intelligence
A form of intelligence that involves the capacity to be intellectually flexible and innovative
Practical intelligence
The intellectual skills used in everyday problem solving. (Sometimes called tacit intelligence)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Ongoing injury to the brain caused by a temporary insult, such as a blow to the head or a deafening explosion. Repeated concussions in youth can cause harm to the brain in later adulthood
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
Ongoing disease and destruction of the brain caused by repeated traumas, such as many blows to the head during an athletic event (tackling in football, heading in soccer, boxing).
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
A psychological disorder character by hallucinations, nightmares, anxiety, and terror, that occurs because of past extreme fear and distress.
Selective optimization with compensation
The theory, developed by Paul and Margaret Baltes, that people try to maintain a balance in their lives by looking for the best way to compensate for physical and cognitive losses and to become more proficient in activities that they can already do well.
Expert
Someone with specialized skills and knowledge developed around a particular activity or area of special interest.
