Ch 4

Simplify an improper fraction

A

Divide the numerator by the denominator. Express it as your whole number answer with the remainder as the numerator over the original denominator. (You might have to reduce it further.)

86/25 = 3 11/25

Q

Convert mixed number to improper fraction.

A

Multiply whole number by the denominator. Add that answer to get the new numerator over the same denominator.

Q

Ch 4

Divide fractions

A
  1. Convert mixed numbers to an improper fraction.
  2. Invert the divisor (number after division sign)
  3. Multiply the numerators.
  4. Multiply the denominators.
  5. Reduce fraction to simplest terms.

3/4 divided by 1/2 = 3/4 x 2/1 = 6/4 =1.5

Q

Ch 4

Apply properties of numbers to multiplying fractions

A

If the same number will go into the numerator and denominator you can “slash” them by dividing that number into top and bottom.

75/26 x 13/25 can be “slashed” by dividing by 25. 3/26 x 13/1 = 39/26

Ch 4

Multiply decimals

A

Maintain a placeholder for all decimal positions. When multiplying by the numeral in the tenths position hold the unit spot with a 0, hundreths with two 0’s, etc. The decimal place in the final answer must be over the same number of decimal places used when multiplying.

(.47 x .526) Line 1 is 3682 |Line 2 is 21040. 5 decimal places. .24722
