- It was written in Marwari and Arz Nagari ways of writing before the arrival of the Muslims
- Many Arabic words were absorbed and it was written in the Arabic script after the Arabs settled in Sindh and influenced Sindhi culture and literature
- Then the subcontinent came under the influence of Central Asian Turkish tribes with their Persian language which also influenced Sindhi

Balochi roots

- Persian and Brohi are also spoken in Balochistan
- Two types: Sulemanki and Mekrani
- Brought into Balochistan by nomadic tribes which migrated from North West Iran
- Little development in literature, oral language, early poetry abounding in folk songs
- 1830: British traveller W Leech reported in the Journal of Asiatic Society about the existence of Balochi language and literature (it went outside the region)
