Very poor, dangerous, long hours, low wages.

It simplified their task and reduced the monopolist work (Repetitiveness)
Why did progressives want to end political machines. Boss politics in the cities?
They wanted to give more power to the people and stop tyrannical governments/leaders.

It showed the people the horrible truth of what was in their food and the conditions the workers were in.
