Discuss the disadvantages of polycrystalline Solar PV cells
Explain the reason for the differing efficiencies of monocrystalline and polycrystalline Solar PV cells.
Monocrystalline cells are manufactured from a single, continuous silicon crystalline structure with no boundaries. The lack of boundaries is highly advantageous as boundaries can cause electrons and holes to resemble at these points and as a result the resistance increases. The lack of boundaries results in minimal resistance and so higher efficiencies.
If a domestic user has a limited roof area available for installing solar PV cells, which type of solar cell is the most advisable? Explain your reasoning.
Monocrystalline cells as it has a better aesthetic appearance and better energy efficiency than polycrystalline cells.
What are the advantages of thin cells compared to either Monocrystalline or polycrystalline solar cells.
Efficiencies do not alter considerably at higher temperatures compared to mono + poly cells do drop efficiency at higher temperatures. They can also be applied to curved surfaces, and can be manufactured to the transparent and so can be used in passive solar technologies.
