Q

The Goal of Selection: Maximize “Hits” and Avoid “Misses”

A

A “Hit” is when the person we select succeeds and performs well on the job.
A “Miss” is when we make the wrong prediction on the candidate.

There is a chart, the bottom axis predicts success and the vertical axis predicts job performance.

2 Types of Misses:

  • False Positive (Bottom Right): Hire someone whoe seems like a good fit during the selection process but fails in the role, the cost of this is wasted recturiment and training cost.
  • False Negative (Top Left): When we reject someone who would have been a good fit. This is harder to detect and unintenionaly eclude members of a protected group, raising issues on fairness and legal compliance.

2 Types of Hits:

  • True Positive (Top Right): Person is selected and succeeds on the job.
  • True Negative (Bottom Left): Person is not selected as we think they would not succeed and we were right
