- muscle: skeletal, cardiac, smooth
- epithelial: lining of digestive tract organs, skin surface
- connective: bones, tendons, fat tissue
consists of one single cell layer, typically found where absorption, secretion,a nd filtration ocur and a thin epithelial barrier is desirable
simple epithelia
composed of 2 or more cell layers stacked on top of each other, common in high abrasion areas where protection is important, such as skin surface and lining of mouth
stratified epithelia
- secrete their products onto body surfaces or into body cavities
- includes mucous, sweat, oil and salivary glands, liver, pancreas, etc.
exocrine glands
most abundant tissue and widely distributed with 4 main classes
- proper
- cartilage
- bone
- blood
connective tissue
- these muscles form flesh of teh body and contract and pull on bones or skin, causing body movements
- long,cylindrical cells that contain many peripherally located nuclei with striated appearance reflecting myofilaments
skeletal muscle
- striated, uninucleate with the nucleus situated centrally
- branching cells that fit together tights at intercalated discs
cardiac muscle
- no visible striations in this muscle type
- spindle shaped and contian one centraly located nucleus
- found in walls of hollow organs
smooth muscle
contians 2 major cell types: neurons and supporting cells
nervous tissue
respond to stimuli
via processes called dendtrites
transmit electrical impulses over substantial distances within gthe body
axons
tissues normally function efficiently thru youth and middle age IF..
