Q

What is mercator projection?

A

Employs a cylinder as the surface on which a sphere is projected
Accurate at the point of tangency, but expands in all directions on either side of that line
The meridians appear on the map as parallel straight lines, while the parallels of lattitudes are straight lines of right angle to meridians
VTC map has it
Accurate maps

Q

What is conic projection (lamberts) charts?

A

Uses cone instead of cylinder as the surface onto which the reduced earth is projected
The cone is imagined to pass through the earths surface at 2 lattitudes called the standard parallels
It is slightly compressed
Charts join perfectly East to West, but not north to south
