what is a chronic adaptation
long term physiological change in the body resulting from consistent exercise trainin over several weeks
muscular adaptation
increased number and size of mitochondria - the more mitochondria have, the better our ability to produce ATP for aerobic energy (mitochondria makes oxygen)
cardiovascular adaptation
Increased size and volume of left ventricle (cardiac hypertrophy) - more blood is pumped from the heart so more blood and oxygen goes to the working muscles to produce aerobic energy
respiratory adaptation
increased tidal volume - increases amount of air inspired and expired by lungs per breath, more oxygen is diffused through the alveoli and delivered to working muscles
all 3 systems
increased vo2 max - more oxygen can be taken in, transported to and used up by the working muscles ot produce energy (become better at using oxygen)
how does lacrosse improve tidal volume
aids performance in lacrosse because it provides oxygen to the muscles, allowing for quick changes in direction, better endurance and a faster recovery between sprints
