Q

A vineyard is being planned in a frost prone area, name two things that could be done during the vineyard layout and planting to help mitigate frost.

A
  • Select a grape variety that is prone to bud after the risk of frost has passed
  • Make sure that the trellising system is high off the ground, minimising the effect of a ground frost
  • Plant only on centre of hills and avoid any hollows where frost could pond
  • Remove any trees, bushes or buildings that may inhibit the flow of frost away from the vineyard

Q

After the vines have been planted it is discovered that the vines are prone to frost, suggest a solution that may help manage frost and explain its use.

A
  • Heaters: Placed around the vineyard to create movement of air, preventing cold from settling
  • Wind Machines: Large fans in the vineyard move air from above the frost line to warm and mix with the freezing air
  • Sprinklers: Water sprayed on buds freezes, releasing heat and insulating the buds and shoots

Q

The vineyard has had a number of factors that help mitigate frost. However, frost is still a problem. Describe what a green harvest is and how this might be used to help combat frost.

A
  • A green harvest is the removal of excessive small bunches to ensure those that remain are the correct drop loading for the plant.
  • Spare buds during spring frost means that if some are destroyed by a frost there are others that can be used. After the risk of spring frost is over and flowering has taken place, excessive buds can be removed.

Q

The Mosel wine region in Germany is subject to frost. Describe two environmental conditions that help manage the risk of frost.

A
  • The vineyards are on steep slopes that allow the frost to drain as opposed to settling, minimising frost risk.
  • The vineyards are by a river, the warmth from the river and the drainage for the cold air minimise the risk of frost.
