What are the 5 overall steps for a conform?

A
  1. Export a reference video
  2. Relink back to the original camera files
  3. Simplify the timeline drastically (as possible everything on the same track for video)
  4. Export timeline into the new format
  5. Import into finishing tool and check for errors

Why export a reference video?

A

To make sure that everything was transferred and relinked properly, and no errors are made (cropping etc)

Key rule for easy relinking

A

Keep the the filename absolutely consistent (proxy and original must have the same filename)

Why do we need to simplify the timeline?

A

Because most interchange formats (edl, xml etc) can’t handle complexity usually

What is a good simplified timeline?

A

It is a timeline collapsed to a single track, with effects and transitions removed

What are the possible formats to export a timeline in after conform?

A

EDL (oldest and most compatible, but cannot hold more than 2 video tracks)
XML (much more flexible and common, but not 100% compatible)
AAF (like XML but standardized. Also not 100% compatible)
Full video export (then cut up in individual shots again)

How do you check that the online edit matches the offline edit?

A

You can check by putting the ref video on top of the online edit and set blend mode to difference (any pixels that are different will appear black and the others in colour)
