Rule 1: Listing
Separating words, phrases, and clauses that are listed out. (Oxford comma)
EX: I need to buy bread, eggs, and milk.
My chores are washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, and feeding the animals.
He ate the pasta, mom ate the burger, and I ate a salad.
Rule 2: Address
Separate letter-from-letter and number-from number in addresses. If addressed for mailing, new lines=commas:
EX: 777 WIndy Road, Olthe
Rule 3: Dates
Separate letter-from-letter and number=from, number in dates. Separate dates from the sentence at starts.
EX: On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Rude 4: Around Initials in names
If someones professional tittle has initial, comas go around the initials.
EX: Lynn Clerk, CPA, is my accountant.
Rule 5: Interjections
Commas go around interjections UNLESS an exclamation point is used!
EX: Hey, it is nice to see you again!
Rule 6: Between Equal Adjectives
Separate adjectives that describe the same noun equally. If their order can be swamped, and it still makes sense, commas need to separate them!
EX: The creepy, scary clown walked down the road at night.
Rule 7: With Clauses
7a. With FANBOYS to join 2 independent clauses.
7b. After a depended clause that starts a sentence
EX: We had a cake for my birthday, but we didn’t have enough.
