What is important in the explanation of alendronic acid?

Answer 1

• Usually taken for 3-5 years, reviewed after to see if continue or stop
• Rare SE: osteonecrosis of jaw (dental check up before)
• Common SE: nausea, dysphagia, heartburn
• Assess cognitive capacity due to complex instructions for administration
• Ensure no contraindications e.g. dysphagia or pre-existing oesophageal conditions

How do you take alendronic acid?

Answer 2

Must be taken on an empty stomach, 30 mins before breakfast or other medicines. Should be swallowed with water whilst sitting or standing and then remain like that for 30 mins after swallowing - no lying down.

What is delirium?

A change in mental state that often starts suddenly but usually improves when physical condition improves. It is characterised by altered consciousness, disturbed cognitive function or perception and has an acute onset and fluctuating course.

What do you need to discuss with carers/family about delirium?

• Ask them to alert staff if there is a change in normal behaviour
• Ask them to help to reduce risk of delirium
• Explain it is common and usually temporary
• Describe people’s experiences of delirium
• Discuss treatment and possible side effects
• Ensure support is in place at home before discharge
• Encourage person who had delirium to share their experiences
