What are the Lamellae?
Weight-bearing, column like matrix tubes composed of mainly of collagen.
3 types: osteon Lamellae, interstitial Lamellae, circumferential Lamellae.
What is an osteon?
AKA Haversian System
- the structural unit of compact bone
What is a Haversian canal?
Central canal containing blood vessels and nerves
What are Volkmann’s canals?
Canal lying at a right angle to the central canal, connecting blood and nerve supply (of the Haversian canal) to the periosteum.
What are lacunae?
Small cavities in bone that contain osteocytes.
What are canaliculi?
Hair like canals that connect lacunae to each other and the central canal (cell-to-cell communication).
