- Located on 1 site and owned by 1 organisation
- Only those who are within the LAN can have access to the services provided.

What is a WAN?
A
- Wide area network
- If loads of LAN’s are joined together then a WAN is formed. E.g. Network of bank cash dispensers, and the Internet
- An organisation will normally own the internal network hardware, but they will normally be using a public network to connect each of the separate branches.

A
- Metropolitan area network
- network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large local area network (LAN) but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network (WAN).
